HISTORY 12 COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to Mr. Austen's History 12 webpage. This course introduces you to the history of the twentieth century, beginning with the treaties that ended World War I and ending with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. While studying these events, you will also be learning the skills necessary to interpret historical events: how to ensure historical information is accurate and relevant, how to develop historical empathy, and how to present clear and logical arguments based on a knowledge of the events that you are assessing. These skills will be helpful to you throughout life. It is important to forewarn any prospective student that the reading list is quite extensive and the expectations are very high. The intention of the course is to prepare you for college and university level courses, but also to give you a strong background of world events which will enhance your interest and understanding of other humanity subjects, like psychology, economics, political science and philosophy. A good understanding of 20th century history will also encourage a better understanding of the world today.
Along with the major textbooks in this course you will be expected to read a series of articles that will move beyond the textbooks. Your textbooks will primarily be secondary sources but your course readings will generally be primary sources. The balance of the two will give you an added perspective to the depth of history. As well, you will watch a variety of historical documentaries from various points of view, which will greatly enhance your understanding, and appreciation of events. While names and dates are crucial to the study of history, what is equally important is understanding the social behaviour of groups and why they do what they do. History is about understanding motives and why cataclysmic events like the Bolshevik revolution, World War One and the rise of Hitler happened. Before becoming critical, we must understand why people in history behaved as they did. Therefore, as you read history you must also make a distinction between fact, inference, and opinion. But before we get too deep in study, I should clarify that the most important thing to do before studying the content of this course is to open your mind and allow information to pass through you freely. Always question why, and don’t be afraid to take a stand. History 12 was my favourite class in high school, and I hope it is yours too!
